Our Program idea is an event for girls between the ages of 11 and 14. The event will consist of a nurse from Vancouver Coastal Health who will speak about body image, confidence building and self esteem. Other planned events will include demos of classes available at sunset like karate, aerobics and dance.

The overnight event is to allow young girls to display their independence and individuality. This time allows the leaders and youth to build a relationship and a bond with the girls. The main idea is to not only learn the names of the girls but to get to know them for their thoughts, insecurities and their strengths. We do acknowledge the concerns of a sleepover and have thought of the following: Giving out consent forms with a flyer about what the evening entails and also pictures with a short biography on each of the five leaders. We are also going to hold orientations at sunset for parents to attend, ask questions and come meet the leaders prior to the event.

With the diversity of the leaders they can speak Punjabi, Hindi and Chinese to parents who don’t have English as a first language. Also, Hardeep is a police officer who will be on site accompanied by all the leaders who are first aid certified. The leaders have all worked at the community centre for years as parks leaders, instructors, daycamp leaders, front desk staff and some have taken part in facilitating workshops.

We feel that this event is a great way to jumpstart future programs for female youth at Sunset. Our future plan consists of a follow up with the girls on a monthly basis, such as a girls night. Also keeping them posted with programs currently running at sunset such as afterschool girls club, girls basketball leagues and arts programs. We would also like to develop new program ideas provided by surveys handed out at the overnight event and with the imput of the active female youth within our community (ie. Girls spring break camp).

All in all, our motive is not only to expose girls to the programs and events Sunset can offer but to also help build strong relationships and friendships among the girls, facilitate positive growth and leadership skills into their lives.

Winter 2010 we will be having monthly Girls night. Dates are as follows:

Fri. Jan 15 - 5-7pm

Fri. Feb 5 - 5-7pm

Fri. Mar 12 - 5-7pm

It is $2.00 to drop in. See the front office at Sunset Community Centre for more info.
